Last One of The Season

Nearly didn't make this one, Ade has been tired and his knee was sore, so we rested him for the week, and then at the 11th hour, after much twisting and debate, we allowed him this last run of the season. Linda was staying at home playing housework and shopping, so Ade and I got up early to head west.. As there was only the two of us in the car, that meant there was room for Our Sophe to travel with us, and so we three super athletes headed off in our little banger to the other side of the country.

We arrived at elevenish, and there were three football matches on at the fields surrounding and we could hardly get parked. Mind it would have been a lot easier if our sprinters mother had only used the one parking space. When we get our newer facilities I hope everyone will have learned to park properly and keep the car park tidy. (Don't worry Beverley Murphy, I said a sprinters mum I didn't tell them it was you).

When we arrived we met up with Janet and Vince and Kieran, registered young Hercules for his spear throwing, and his race, and then on to the track. Now I have never thrown a spear in my life, so thanks to Vince for warming little Hercules up for me. He actually won the competition with a whopping 22.67m. I think Vince won his as well, but I was mainly watching the littleuns not the owld fellas.

As ever there was only a handful of athletes there from Birtley, but lots of good performances. Kayleigh Brown waited patiently for her cricket Ball throw, that seemed to be about an hour late, so she and Kieran took part in that, I believe Kayleigh won hers and Kieran was about fifth. Kayleigh threw in the Shot Putt as well, but her mum didn't actually tell me how she did in that event. Kieran also did the standing long jump, and I think did about 1.2m which is just about his height I would think so well done zebedee (wonder how many of you remember the magic roundabout)

Kate ran in the 100 and 200 winning both (I think) the 200 she had wrapped up with 30 metres to go and so strolled home the last 15m just like they do in th heats at the Olympics. Well done Kate.

Our Sophe finished 3rd in the hurdles after clattering her trailing knee on the third hurdle (ouch!) did very well to finish though I would have just stopped and cried. We tried to talk her out of the long jump, but she insisted and won that with a PB of 4.35. Then about an hour later …perhaps a bridge too far….she won the 800m in her usual impressive style, but collapsed in a heap as she was leaving the track. (Thanks to Elaine? Who helped us with her) . That put paid to the lads and lasses relay team, but never mind there are more important things, and bigger fish to fry as they say in our office!

The race of the day and Adrian was in it, although not part of it. Simon? From Aspatria can do 4:51 for the 1500 and Robbie and Ade lined up against him, Adrian came 3rd with 5:06…. respectable, But Simon picked the wrong person to "play with", he kept upping and downing the pace, and Robbie stayed with him, until he kicked at 400 to go. Robbie gave him 5m headstart and then ran the legs off him over the last 400 and won in a time of 4:52 that is PB -4seconds. Well done Robbie great race.

If Robbie gets race of the day, I think I will nominate myself for supporter of the day, because I was great as well.

That is the end now of a very busy track season, and everybody that competed has done well for both themselves and the club so well done and have a deserved rest…but not too long though cos soon you will have to carry the flag for the club in the x country season as well!!!

We went home, and had to stop on the way home for a nosebag on the way home in a nice little pub. Meanwhile as we entered the pub we did see a familiar little greeny Yaris go past us as we went into the pub, but that must have been a coincidence , it couldn't have been Kate and mam, cos they left 20 minutes before us, unless they had been to the Lakes for a coffee on their way home!!

Mrs Watt and family were unavailable for competition as they have now migrated to Gateshead with their talents. That is they drive through our little town and passed our little club to go to their new club, never mind Mandy we are still your friends.

Lee Millmore had a great run at Watergate, but I think that was Wednesday last week, well done Lee, I think Tracy said you were 6th, and it is a hill course there as well. But not wanting to be outdone by Lee, our favourite none Birtley runner finished in 18 and a bit minutes for the 5k and was first lady, so even better well done to you Tracy.

Foot note: YB is under the physio at the moment. My leg is like a teabag, as she treats me with acupuncture. I will however try to be back in shape in time for the North Easterns in December That is my target, and I hope that just like last year we will have a complete senior team, actually a complete vets team would be nice!!
